Automatic Note Taking Tool [ANT] - Figma Design
Prototype of an application that lets university students take notes during lectures in sync with the slide of the presentation and the professor’s voice transcript. This was a project in which we focused exclusively on the emotions of the users. We analyzed the emotions students go through during classes and came up with a design that not only is functional but also help enhance the mood of the students with bright colors.
Background
This project was done as a part of the course ‘User Experience and Mobile Interaction’ at UPM. The end goal of the project was to successfully build a prototype of a mobile application starting with an idea, validating both the UX and UI using the human-centered design process. This project was done between October 2020 to December 2020 i.e a period of 90 days.
Research Phase
Start off with Business Requirements, follow it up with idea validation.
Business Research
We had a focus group testing with two different user groups (students and working professionals) to understand the requirements of the application. We concluded that the students had more need of an application like this due to the severity of the problems they face.
Key Findings
User Needs
We had the following conclusion about the features that users would like to have in a note taking application:
Need to cross-reference the notes with slides and recorded video.
User Research
This Phase includes User Research and Profiling followed by the creation of User Journey Map(s) followed by a mood board for the colour and tone of the application.
User Profile: As concluded previously, Students are our main target user profile.

Ideate Phase
This Phase includes Sketching followed by LoFi Prototyping and HiFi Prototyping with usability testing only with HiFi Prototype.
Sketching
We made some sketches of how we planned our application to look. The UX process of how the application is cycled through was also decided from this phase. The following pen and paper sketches were finalized initially.



LoFi Prototype
These were basically a reference for us about the components that we need to include in the final HiFi prototype.


Design System
Design system is a very important part of any design as it is the base on which the whole product is built. Based on our Moodboard, we defined a design system for our application.



Hifi Prototype
This is the final prototype we came up with.



Conclusion
User Experience Questionnaire
We received very positive results from the HiFi testing, which means that the design at the moment is good enough to be published and most people will be very happy to use this product. But, we identified some refinements that could further enhance their experience. We do not need to validate this further as the results of UEQ point towards a very pleasant experience.

Improvements that could be made
- Better test setup to understand the "efficiency" issue (from the UEQ).
- Revise the design (user flow &interaction) for "file linking" and "pagelinking" concept.
- Make pause/stop buttons more visible.
- Make the settings more visible. Perhaps revise the flow for settings.
- Make optional steps more clearly distinguished from the compulsory steps.
